Ophthalmology in Costa Rica
Ophthalmology specialists are known as ophthalmologists or eye doctors. They focus their work in the diagnosis of diseases and disorders of the eyes, and provide surgery when needed.
Like other diseases, the application of a pharmacological treatment must be established by the attending physician. Some of the conditions that can be treated are allergic, infectious, and inflammatory conditions.
Other diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, or myopia may need surgery. These procedures should be authorized by an ophthalmology specialist.
It is important to clarify that an ophthalmologist is different than an optometrist, a medical technician who can examine the eyes for visual problems and correction, and also to diagnose and manage ocular disease. However, the both are complementary in some treatments and they generally work closely together.
