Tummy tucks, called an abdominoplasty, are cosmetic body surgeries that “tuck” the skin of the abdominal area, thereby tightening loose skin and also the abdominal muscles when needed. Tummy tucks are very popular because of the wide segment of the population who can benefit from them.
The sagging tummy skin can happen to anyone – male or female – who has experienced a significant weight loss and their skin’s elasticity has lost its ability to bounce back. This is especially true the older we get, because our skin becomes less elastic and more prone to sagging.
A lot of women also get tummy tucks after giving birth because of the massive change in skin elasticity post pregnancy, along with loss of tone of the abdominal muscles. Despite a lot of working out, many times this loose skin cannot be fixed or exercised off.
Tummy tucks help these people flatten their tummies, narrow their waists, remove excess skin, nicely contour fat, and tighten their abdominal muscles – resulting in shapely sculpted abdomens. A tummy tuck, in many cases, also can remove stretch marks below the belly button. Stretch marks that are above the belly button are moved down, but not removed. The belly button is then re-positioned to its proper location.
Results from these procedures are permanent. However, if you gain weight, you can adversely affect the results. Women should not undergo a tummy tuck until after they finish having children. Scars after surgery are permanent, although they fade with time. If there was a C-Section, usually the same scar can be used.
Tummy tucks in Costa Rica are a smart alternative to high-priced cosmetic surgeries in North America, normally not covered by insurance unless there are health issues involved. Tummy tucks in Costa Rica are a safe, affordable cosmetic body surgery performed by highly-skilled surgeons.
How is a Tummy Tuck done?
Most surgeons perform tummy tuck surgery using general anesthesia. The length of surgery varies with the amount of work needed, although most cases usually take 2 – 3 hours.
Normally during a tummy tuck, your surgeon will make a horizontal incision within or just above the pubic area, called a bikini cut. The length of the incision depends on the amount of skin that will be removed, on the structure of your abdomen, and your personal preferences on the style of swim suits and undergarments that you wear.
Loose skin will be pulled down and tightened, and excess abdominal skin will be removed. Liposuction is used to remove excess fat if necessary. After the entire abdomen has been closed in layers, your surgeon may place a drain to help any remaining fluids to drain out quickly, thus accelerating healing and preventing infection.
What is recovery like after a Tummy Tuck in Costa Rica?
You will need to stay in the hospital overnight at minimum after surgery. For the first several days you should stay reclined with bent knees or in a sitting position, avoiding straightening up, to keep tension off of your stitches, and possibly ripping them out. The first few months after a tummy tuck, physical activity should be limited to movements that are comfortable and non-strenuous.
Surgical drains will be removed within a week after surgery in most cases. You may be instructed to wear a support garment for several weeks and to take prescribed pain medication. Bruising and swelling is expected after the surgery and will disappear over time. The incision also will heal over time; however, the incision lines will be permanently visible even though they will fade.
It usually takes at least eight weeks to recover your normal energy after such a major surgery. Final results of a tummy tuck will be seen within a few months, after the swelling subsides.
